Covid closure january 2021
Dear Parents/students
I hope you and your families are keeping well and safe. All of the work for the students to complete while school closures are running is on Google Classroom. If you child logs into Google using their school email account they can access it. Their school email account is [email protected]. For example if their name was Mary Bloggs it would be [email protected] Once logged in, go to Google's homepage and click on the nine dots in the top right corner and you will see Google Classroom. They log in on the chromebooks in school so they should have no problem accessing Google Classroom. Some of the work may be digitally based but I will also make sure to have work that they can complete using their schoolbooks and a pen and paper. I have posted some links for useful websites that can be used as additional resources (some of them may feature in the work that I will assign). If you have questions or queries, you can email me on [email protected] during work hours. Students can contact me via Google Classroom.

September 2020
Sixth class are delighted to be back in school after an extra long break. September has come and gone in a flash but there was some great work done in our temporary classroom this month. The students have bonded fantastically well together in their new class group. Here are some of the things we covered during the month of September.
English: We spent some time in September revising over the writing genre of Recount. The students wrote some Recounts about their lockdown experience and about our walking tour of Drogheda. We also spent some time discussing descriptive writing and the students are showing encouraging signs of being more expressive with their writing. We completed a number of comprehensions and engaged in lots of oral language actitivites through discussion, project presentations and through drama.
Gaeilge: We were looking at the theme of Mé Féin in Irish for the month of September. The students worked on developing their vocabulary and a challenge was set for students to be able to speak about themselves and their families for two minutes in Irish. I have been encourging the students to download Duolingo on their tablets or phones and to spend five minutes a day on it in order to help improve their Irish vocabulary.
Maths: We spent a good bit of time working on Mental Maths for the month of September. Tables are very important and it is very frustrating for students when they get sums wrong because of making mistakes with tables. We also worked on the topic of 'Data' which is very relevant in today's climate. Students learned about how to collect and gather data and learned different ways in which data can be represented. Furthermore, we worked on the topic of 'Place Value' along with addition and subtraction.
SESE: This month's SESE focused on the town of Drogheda and it's history. We learned about the history of Drogheda and we went on a walking tour to see some of this history in the flesh. The students learned about Drogheda under a number of different headings such as 'transport', 'industry', 'education' and 'nature'. We then did a case study on the Burren region in County Clare and compared and contrasted the two places. We looked at challenges facing the Burren region and challenges facing Drogheda.
PE: Unfortunately, coronavirus is limiting what we can do for PE but despite this, the students have enjoyed developing their running technique and working on their speed and agility through games like bulldog.
Drama: Each pod group in the class have scripted and prepared their own drama which was then preformed in front of the class. There were some fantastic scenes ranging from serious to absurd. Great fun was had by all while oral language skills and drama skills were being developed.
Art: The students made coronavirus safety posters with slogans in Art this month. Many of them were very creative and unique. The students also drew portraits of themselves wearing a mask but the mask could be pulled down to reveal their characteristics 'Behind the Mask'.
