English: We were practising the reading strategies of 'Questioning' and 'Skimming'. The students were asking questions as they read their texts. They made lists of 'I wonder' questions as they read their stories. We also practised 'Skimming'. This is when the students quickly skim through text to gain a basic understanding of what the text is about and to pick out some keys points from headings. We did the poems 'If I were a Panda' and 'Bad Hair Day'. The students did various writing exercises to practice procedure writing. Students wrote procedures on how to make a sandwich, how to carry out an experiment and one student even wrote a procedure of 'How to escape when you are grounded!' We received letters from secondary school students in Japan and we wrote letters back to them. We have also begun 'Friday Speeches' and we have heard some fantastic speeches on topics such as owls, soccer, World War 2 and St. Peter's Church. The boys are girls are working hard to ensure they have a clear voice, body language, expression and eye contact.

Maths: We have begun doing more work on problem solving questions in Maths. The students have been using the RUCSAC (Read, Understand, Choose, Solve, Answer, Check)model of answering problem solving questions. As always we are trying to improve our mental maths speeds and we had another Maths challenge with Ms. O'Kane's class. The students were also learning about fractions and how to get halves and quarters of numbers.

Gaeilge: We were doing the topic of Caitheamh Aimsire (Hobbies) in Irish. The students learned lots of verbs associated with this topic such as 'ag dreapadh', 'ag rith', 'ag sleamhnú' and how to use them in sentences, both spoken and written. Many students are making efforts to speak and use Irish throughout the day- Maith sibh!

SESE: We spent a lot of time this month working on our China project. The students had to work together in teams to complete their projects on China. They used books from the Drogheda library and Ipads to find information about China. Well done to the Fire-breathers and Ringmasters tables who had the best project and teamwork respectively.

We did two experiments in Science- one was to check the effects of vinegar on eggs and the other was to check how materials affect heat. The students came up with some great Science questioning and predicting.
Spellings: Well done to all the boys and girls who are working hard at improving their spellings. If you child is having difficulty, you can get them to follow the steps Read, Cover, Write. Encourage your child to make a picture of the word in their head and recognise the length of the word. It is also beneficial to break the word into syllables using counters and then changing sounds to find words that rhyme with the original word.
